For the research phase of our project, we conducted interviews, observations and secondary research. The observations I conducted were in IUPUI Counseling Psychological Services(CAPS) and campus center. The demographics of users who were to be interviewed was students, campus police and CAPS members and professionals. We interviewed a few people out of which 2 were campus police and 2 were the members of IUPUI CAPS to understand the current procedure and facilities available in the university. We also interviewed 6 students to get an idea on how aware are they about the services offered by the university.
After doing all the observations and interviews, I created user persona and jotted down the pain-points and frustrations gathered in our research phase. The persona created was of a female student pursuing her masters from the university. I also listed out her goals and frustrations. Most of the students said that they were unaware of the resources that are available in such situations. I used Adobe Photoshop to create the user personas.
Circle of 6 is a system that allows you to create a trusted circle in the app, to which you can send a predetermined message with your location and ask for help. The message goes with a location but has no details of the situation which is kind of a limitation to the app.
Callisto is an application that allows users to report sexual assaults and send it once the user is comfortable and ready. This system also matches victims of the same perpetrator so that it becomes easy to identify repeat offenders.
JDoe is the world’s first truly anonymous, end-to-end encrypted reporting platform for survivors (and witnesses) of sexual assault, rape and harassment.
Since the approach was supposed to be a collaborative approach, we thought of a voice enabled emergency application that will send SOS signals.Sends Voice-enabled alerts to the list of people in their emergency contacts and to near by people, so that they can approach the location as soon as possible to rescue.
Some streets are really shady while some are much safer, hence we thought of a system that will allow you to report streets as danger or safe zone and hence create a database of all the street names where crimes have been committed to avoid taking that route.A system that will alert you for the danger zones and suggest you a safer route to reach your destination safely.
There is a send emergency alert notification that helps you send alerts to people nearby, policies and your emergency contacts. This alert is send with the users live-location which makes it easier to track and rescue the user.
A voice-enabled feature allows you to set up a phrase in your voice and sends an emergency alert with your location to people nearby, the police and your emergency contacts when you say the phrase you selected.
Since this is a collaborative approach to women safety and the app sends out signals to people near-by as well. We added the mandatory scan your college ID before registration to avoid any mis-use of the application.
After deciding on the features we created storyboards that will explain better use of those features and help users understand them. We created 2 storyboards describing the use of both the important features.
It is late night and Sierra is walking alone on the street. She is worried about her safety and hence she decides to use the application. She taps on the emergency button and sends out emergency signals to people. Some people near by receive the signal and decide to go there and walk her home.
A girl is walking alone on the street late night. She notices some guy who is following her and then he tries to be physically aggressive with her. She has no time to open the application and hence she uses the voice enabled feature and shouts her selected phrase. This sends out emergency signals and notifies people nearby that she needs help. Some people receive the notification and reach there to rescue her.
